Shotgun sequencing can detect rare or unexpected microbes, including Vibrio, Aeromonas, and other environmental organisms.
Interpretation framework:
- High abundance + GI symptoms → Consider true infection, particularly with exposure history (seafood, travel, contaminated water)
- Low abundance + no symptoms → Potentially transient exposure or environmental contamination
Always integrate with:
- Clinical presentation (diarrhea, fever, dehydration)
- Exposure and travel history
- Concurrent lab findings (inflammatory markers, blood in stool)
