Menopause results in a lot of variable changes across the whole body, and the gut and vaginal microbiomes are no exception.
Studies have shown that diversity in the gut is often lower during menopause and menopausal therapy can directly impact the gut microbiome (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9379122/). While in the vaginal microbiome, shifts in hormones can result in changes in the microbiome composition, which leads to vaginal dryness and other symptoms (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27451320/). This makes menopause a key time to test and take actions to support gut and vaginal health.
